012 ‘Inception’ themed signature

7 Jan

A signature you're obviously not seeing.

I saw the movie on January 1st for the first time and it was awesome ! I’m already a huge fan of another movie made by the same director (Christopher Nolan), The Dark Knight, and now this one… Well, maybe I’m going to become a fan of all the movie he makes… We’ll see with The Dark Knight Rises this summer!

This one was kind of made on a whim, without much thinking. I simply searched for some Inception posters on Google Images and for some character’s illustration on Danbooru, put everything together using a lot of fusion modes as usual, and that was it. I started out by doing a wallpaper version first, then compressed the elements to make a signature.

There’s a whole lot of details that can’t be seen on the signature version, so here’s the wallpaper version I made:

A wallpaper I made that you're obviously not seeing.

A whole lot of details… and that the light part of the ‘rotated’ buildings are really pixelated. Plus, some obscure thing happened at the top left corner, I just noticed… I used a layer of black to take off the INCEPTION that was put in that corner, but it seems that after modifying other stuff, it didn’t really work…

Here’s all the stuff I used for this:

  •  A really nice poster of Inception. Used it in the top right part, for color and texture. Plus there’s a big “-CEPTION” that can be seen. :)
  • A OK Inception poster. I basically put this poster and the next one () together to form the left side of the thing. Even though I took of all the text on the clouds, we can’t really see the poster, on neither of the versions…
  • A cool badass Inception poster. (The INCEPTION from the top left corner.) It’s the major part of the wallpaper/signature. I only had to select the lighter part of the picture and take it off, then add an “external glow” via the layer effects. We can still see some of the people in the wallpaper version, though that wasn’t what I was going for and although that could have been a really nice thing to explore and to use.
  • I don’t actually know what this is, maybe a poster for the Blu-ray version… Anyways, I used it in the top right part (obviously) and it came out quite good. Well, okay, that’s what I say, but to like this you have to like this kind of ‘cut-out’ creations. …Which I don’t do very often, because it’s a little troublesome.
  • An illustration by コガシロウ (or kogashirou on Danbooru), on Pixiv. It’s Arthur, for those who saw the movie. There were actually way more resembling drawings, but I took this one because the others simply didn’t fit with the ‘mood’ of the wallpaper. They weren’t ‘active’, ‘dynamic’ enough.

That’s all for this one, it’s all only fusion modes anyway. :>

011 Second time on Oekaki

18 Dec
You obviousy aren't seeing this blonde girl, with bunny ears and a flashy magenta background.

Second time; looks A LOT better.

I did this right after publishing my latest article. The whole thing took 1:45. It was at the same place than my first Oekaki, at Pallid BSS. Post #1015.

The lineart actually only took about 30 minutes, but the coloring… god. I really get to use the ‘smoothing tool’, as I call it, in this one. I used it for everything except the hair. I really think the way the eyes are made doesn’t fit with the rest; the eyes are all smooth-looking, though the hair and lineart in general is really ‘pixel art-ish’.

Now that I think about it, I didn’t really check is the arms are proportionnate. Or OK-looking. And I just remembered I forgot to add the light parts, over everything except the hair. That means no 3D-ish effect. Meh. (Oh and by the way, when I talk about ’3D-ish effect’, I’m actually talking about depth, ‘CG 3d-ish’.)

I really liked the hair, when I drew the ‘first sketch’ with circles and lines – you could call that a ‘base’- which I then ‘inked’ on another layer. Plus I’ve taken advantage of the ‘fusion modes’ for the eyes and screwed up less with the layering than the last time, when my lineart was at the bottom and the colors on the top of it…

Speaking of the eyes, they look a lot like the first one, but I like how this came out better than the other. The eyes look more… ‘fitting’, though they’re a tiny bit too big. Anyways, the face looks already too big, so the eyes seem to accentuate that.

As for the colors… I like how the jean came out. The cloth looks normal, except for the right leg on which, as I said, the ‘highlights’ are missing. I think the shirt is OK, though now that I see it again, the left breast doesn’t seem, how can I put this, proportionnate. That’s partially why I usually don’t draw breasts at all, but at least I got to pratice with this drawing.

There’s a tiny problem with the left ear: the tip of it should have been broaden to ressemble the right ear.

As usual, the folds don’t look very natural, particularly on the left shoulder, but at least I don’t have any leaning problems. Or so I think.

One thing’s for sure – I’ll be getting back on Oekaki.

010 First time on Oekaki

16 Dec
A not so well-drawn drawing that you're obviously not seeing.

Rândôm character.

I thought I’d try out something new, Googled ‘oekaki’, read some stuff on Wikipedia, then Googled ‘oekaki without registration’, found an oekaki board and just… drew.

Since I thought back at how I drew two eyes previously, I didn’t even bother trying and just put some hair over the other one. Since I mentionned hair – I also think that the locks of hair falling over this… thing’s shoulders doesn’t seem quite… normal. Or looks like dreadlocks – that’s what I was aiming for. But at least I got the chance to experment with drealockish hair

The ears are not on the same ‘level’ and as usual, if you reverse the pic, you’ll see it’s leaning on the left. I really, really need to correct that problem, because it occurs in all my 3/4 on front view drawings. I think I should draw with a background made of vertical lines to correct this. And the leaning’s not just it: it’s also a problem with the hair, more abundant on the left side than on the ride. Usually I invert the canvas horizontally regularly when I draw in Paint Tool SAI, but that won’t quite solve the problem just like that, because on paper I can’t keep reversing the sheet over and over and memorising where the errors are, though seeing where the errors are and correcting them with SAI is good to see what needs more work.

I didn’t really work on the hoodie-like thing… Though I like the texture that I made with the ‘finger’ (?!… it’s called ‘finger’ in French, but the thing din’t have a name on the Oekaki page I used… u-u’ Maybe ‘smoothing tool’…) tool. Looks nice.

I also used the ‘smoothing tool’ for the skin, which gives off a nice ’3D-ish’ effect. And I prefer not mentionning the eye. I already make some slightly crappy eye on paper, so with a tablet, ugh… I know it’s not that bad, but I could’ve done better with SAI. Though it’s exactly the purpose of Oekaki to not make a perfect drawing – or so it seems.

And yeah, at the beginning I was wondering why in hell the ‘program’ couldn’t create small strokes when I touched my tablet slightly with the pen and took it as a lag, but in the end I just didn’t care anymore. ==’ It’s still very frustrating, though.

The layers. The time I passed figuring out how that thing, on the left side, worked is almost half of the time all the drawing took. I discovered I could lower the opacity of a layer right before I saved the thing.

The background was made with the ‘smoothing tool’ too.

Here‘s where I published my drawing (and where the ‘program’ is, too). It’s post #1014. I was really surprised when I saw the size of the canvas. 200×200, 300×300 or 400×400. That’s so tiny ! But I eventually got used to it and just drew what could actually fit into 400×400.

I just learned that if you go to this line, at the top:

sort by newer picture sort by newer comment  view property – view thumbnails

And you tick in the “View property” box, you can actually see how many brushstrokes, and every other technical stuff, the drawer made when doing the pic… That’s quite impressive, but when I strated I ticked in “property not shown” so… Nothing shows up for my drawing. :< I had approximatively 15 layers and spent 1:30 on this thing… Meh.

I’m sure I’ll be getting back on this thing. Knowing exactly how much time it took and everything is really… Well, let’s be honest, mindblowing. Since you can’t get this on SAI, Photoshop, or any other painting program.

009 (More than) A few drawings.

27 Nov

Since I had some time while the scanner was available, I scanned some drawings. Some are very, very old but some were drawn as recently as this week. I scanned ten or eleven sheets, but I put some of them together to save space and have less files to worry about. What I just said isn’t clear at all, but let’s go on to the first (mini-)batch.

This is the first batch of drawings, that you're obviously not seeing.

First batch, let's call it "A". You can click on it to see it bigger.

This one is quite recent. There’s the character design on the right and the result on the left. I did the character design (i.e. making up the whole character’s looks) somewhere at the beginning  of October and the other drawing was made on the 17th of October. I drew this character for a fursona mascot contest over at Harajuku-Mangaka, but in the end I didn’t have enough time to upload it and since there was only one entry, the contest was canceled. It’s supposed to be reopened later this year (in December, I suppose) so I’ll definitely try entering. Maybe I’ll draw something better than this, though. I progressed (a little lot) since I drew this. I would be drawing the feet differently, because actually it seems like it’s not the same person’s feet. The fingers are way too small. The little band of ‘fabric’ that goes over the right side of here skirt is quite… strange. It’s too “still”. There’s also a problem with the ears; they are way too big. Her head simply can’t hold ears as big as these. And some “folds” in the skin of the ears, right near where they connect with the head, would be really nice. The face is strangely done, but that’s maybe only because I usually shade everything, from faces to toes, something I didn’t do here. Or maybe it’s a simple lack of detail over that area that is the problem.

Batch B, that you're obviously not seeing.

Second batch of drawings, "B".

Now this is a little bit more recent. These are also character designs, though for their needs, I didn’t bother to draw a body for each of them. These are characters for a story I thought about after listening to the song Armistice by the indie group Phoenix (I still don’t know what “indie” exactly means though I’ve been listening to the genre for almost a year now…). It’s about time travel, but it’s a little twisted since I learned some stuff about the possible shape of the universe recently, and I don’t have a “stable” stry for now. I have 3 characters: the one on the left side of the sheet, with the wavy hair and the angel-ish face, the one with a =_= look in the top right corner, and the girl in the bottom right corner. I simply hate how I drew her (that explains why, just beside the drawing of the profile, I drew what her skull would look like if it was shaped like that), the two times. And I had serious problems with the serious-faced guy’s neck. It’s just… urgh. So complicated to draw ! And I don’t really like the wavy haired guy’s profile, either. What kind of a chin is that, huh ? I made some notes in French, on the eyebrows, general shape of the head, skin color and little details like that.

Batch C, that you obviously aren't seeing.

The third "batch" of drawings, "C".

THAT is some truly old stuff. With some new stuff, too. In the middle you can see the first ever drawing of characters I call “Maëlle” (to the left) and “Joëlle” (to the right). This was draw in October 2009,  around the time I changed from SoleileCouchante to Shem Phera. Nowadays, I would say this is an O.K. drawing, for that time (’cause I remember stuff much, much worse from around that time). But, hey, the anatomy looks almost extraterrestrial. Those hips, man, those hips. Maëlle, particularly.  Those hands, man, those hands. Those arms… those arms. Those shoulders. Those knees. Those hair locks, without an ounce of detail. Those face shapes, for Joëlle. Those breasts, man. WHERE IS THOU BOSOM, MAËLLE ? Where is thou neck, Joëlle ? Or, more precisely, where does you neck attach to the rest ? We want some sexy collar bones, do you hear me ?! Ehem. Next you have how I drew them, not so long ago, probably in October. I actually don’t really like the new drawings either, but meh, at least there’s some comparison that can be made. And there’s Fay (on the extreme right), too, which I invented around that time. Fay was a little more punkish before, here she seems kind of… deflated. I won’t say much on Maëlle and Joëlle relationship, but if you figured everything out only from me mentioning it, well… bravo. I don’t think you’ll be hearing much about Maëlle and Joëlle stuff, though. The story in which they were “used” (it’s kind of cruel to say that, as an artist, but meh, that’s kind of how it is) doesn’t… really… inspire me anymore.

The third batch that you're obviously not seeing.

The third batch of drawings, "D".

This is an “old v/s” old batch. Do you see the size of that face and those extraterrestrial eyes ? The lovely lack of detail in the hair ? The lovely lack of shading over the skin ? The cannot…unsee… lack of anything on the legs ? The dress, levitating on the right side of the image ? Well. That’s how I drew in March 2010. And the image on the right is something that was never finished. I was quite proud of how I drew the right hand, though. I drew without any knowledge of anatomy – and that’s the MAJOR problem I see in other people drawings. I am not saying I draw perfectly. What I’m saying is that lack of knowledge of basic human anatomy is, sometimes, very obvious. But let’s leave that for some other time. Wow, that right shoulder looks skinny as hell. And I’m not even talking about the legs. The legs are… less than bone.

The fifth batch of drawings that you're obviously not seeing.

The fifth "batch" of drawings, "E".

Now THIS is some really recent stuff. The one of the right is, anyway. I drew it on the 10th of November, for the lineart (which took me a little over an hour), and put the “colors” (shading, black & white) on the 11th. As for the one on the left… I probably drew it in less than ten minutes. And That is, by the way, the proof that I drew almost everywhere I can. Those are math notes. And on the top part of the drawing on the right, you can see some official stuff, from my school. Yes, I do draw on that. It was a nice, wide white space. Puurrrfect. I didn’t put much though on the one on the left side, I just thought about something reptilian (I have indeed read Pandect, the web-comic, for those wondering). As for the one on the right… That is my fursona (or, rather, my furry-sona), that I also drew in my first article. It has changed a little from last time, but meh, people change. The right foot looks a little strange, but I think there rest is o.k. But how can that nose be some cute… ? I think the hair should be a bit more “bouncy”, it looks “solid” here. The wings are meant not to be attached. I wasn’t sure if I would keep them or not. The eyes are nice. The little freaky touch is discrete. And by the way, I’ve just seen how my “f” in “f(x)”, in my math notes, changes almost every time…

The sixth batch that you're obviously not seeing.

The sixth batch of drawings, "F".

These are the ones that were done this week. The first I drew is the one in the bottom left corner, started on November the 14th and done mostly on the 15th. It’s my furry-sona again, with different clothing because I wanted to see some collar bones this time. It was actually supposed to be something to relieve my anger towards some people, with a caption like “F*** thee all” but in the end I simply did this. The belt looks quite interesting from afar, but when you see it up close it’s quite simply done. With the same freaky eyes. I forgot my furry-sona now had some longer locks of hair (seriously, it went out of my head, though I was drawing on the same sheet as for the right side of Batch E). For those wondering, the little faint marks on the left, with the arrows and the strange face with a smile, were done when I drew on my eraser and used it as a “pattern” (I know this isn’t the right name, but I don’t know how you call those things in English), that’s why they’re called “Erase art”. The next drawing I drew was the one on the top, in the middle. I did it to pass time (thus it only took 15 minutes) and improvised some cat-faced girl. The drawing in the right bottom corner was drawn next, on the 15th for the lineart (1hour 45minutes), the 16th for the black & white + shading and the 17th for the colors (skin, wings [yes, the "bones" and the "skin" of the wings are colored], hair, Arizona can). At the beginning, I thought about putting an umbrella instead of the Arizona Iced Tea can, but I abandoned the thing – too complicated for not much. I put the can instead and it turned out really cool. It was more flashy before I scanned it, though, but this color’s not so bad. If you want my honest opinion, I think the butt looks… strange. I think it’s too small. But I’m not a specialist of boy’s/man’s butt, so don’t ask me ! The rest looks good. I wish I could’ve know more about bat wing anatomy, because like this the wing on the left looks a little strange. I suppose we naturally understand I wanted to make some good-looking strange angle effect, but meh, could be a little better. I’m almost 100% sure the problem comes from the “bone” part of the wing: it’s supposed to be solid, not foldable ! And, to conclude, the hair isn’t supposed to look that dark. I know the shirt with the sleeves looks a little strange (the way I chose to make it hold is strange from the start)… that’s just some somewhat failed folds. I simply have to put a little emphasis on the jean’s pocket. It’s two wings, a devilish tail and some horns. c: Now for the last drawing (I suggest you view it from a -90° rotation, because if not… it looks like my furry-sona is defying gravity and sleeping on the floor): I did the lineart on the 20th of November, it took me approximately 3 hours. I did the black & white & shading in 30 minutes, while in class.  The part up of the legs is my favorite. The expression on that face is simply… priceless. Can you imagine someone so tired that he sleeps while leaning on a wall ? I like the shirt; I simply nailed the baggy style I wanted to do ! And those sweat pants, man. I think I partly failed them, but meh, the spirit seems there. I like the headphones’ design, too. And those ears… those little cute, sleepy ears… I really like how the right feet (the left one on the pic) turned out. I finally got to use the stuff I learned about feet viewed in profile ! How it should look like a box, and a triangle… I think the right arm is strange. I based it on a Final Fantasy XIII poster (Lightning’s arm, obviously) and it didn’t turn out as good as expected. But I like the rest, it compensates. (:

The seventh batch that you're obviously not seeing.

The seventh 'batch' of drawings, "G".

Now for this last batch ! This one really sticks out because it’s not a drawing and looks more like notes… Well, these are notes I made for myself on stuff I would like to make. On the left side, you have what looks like a circle with… stuff around and on it. It’s a headphone. I would like to make myself some headphones that have LEDs in it, just for the fun of it. It still needs some thorough thinking though, as to were I’ll put the LEDs, exactly, how many of them I’ll put, where and how will I put a on/off switch in, etc. The “project” (if I may call it like that) on the left is a drawing table, or post, or board, as you like it. I want it to have two exchangeable “interface”: one that’ll be able to rotate 180° and one that’ll simply be stable. Right this minute I had an idea for how to stop the rotating part from rotating indefinitely while I’ll be drawing, so don’t worry about that. I just have to find out how I’ll find everything I need (I know [more or less...] what I need for the rotating part, but I don’t know where of even if I’ll be able to find that kind of thing) and how I’ll put everything together. The thing is, I haven’t done much DIY things in my life. But I’m eager to start. : )

That’ll be all for tonight. It’s not even “November 26″ anymore… Didn’t figure commenting on all this would that This much time.

008 Two (more) signatures ! (+ mini Photoshop tutorial for the two of them)

26 Nov

First, please excuse me for not posting anything for almost a month. Exams, you know ? They kill free time. D:

A signature made up from multiple images that you're obviously not seeing.

A signature I made up from multiple images.

This is, without hesitation, the most “complex” image manipulation I made. It’s made from 5 images that appear clearly, and a 6th that I used as a “texture” (with a ‘fusion mode’). The first from the left-handed corner (up), with the red headphones, was drawn by fujiwara (ふじやまポテトフライ) (Pixiv page here), but I can’t seem to find the link to the original image on Pixiv, so here’s the link to the Danbooru page (NSFW adds, beware!) where you can find the pic I used. I really didn’t do much to this one, except adding the 6th image, used as a texture. For the second image to the right of that one, there isn’t even an author… So here’s the Danbooru page for that one. I thought it was Kagamine Len, a Vocaloid, but it seems like it’s a character from Persona 4. I only had to take off the background and put an orange flat color in the back of it. I used this image twice: the second time is the second picture from the right, on the top right-handed corner. Since I only needed a small part for that “frame”, I figured I’d better not get a whole other image. The third image, starting from the top left-handed corner, is my favorite. I planned on using the original picture in another signature, so I didn’t put the whole thing in. Since the cyan blue matched fairly with the rest, I only had to insert the picture into the frame (I’ll talk more about that part later). Here’s the Pixiv link to the original picture, and here’s the link to the author’s, “Shiro(reptil)” on Danbooru and しろ/青プP32 on Pixiv, Pixiv profile. As for the 4th image, here’s the Pixiv page (image) and here’s the author’s page, siroooo on Danbooru and 46 on Pixiv.. The 5th picture can be found here on Pixiv; the author’s name is himishiro on Danbooru and ひみしろ on Pixiv (here’s his/her page). This one was not intended to be a filler, but since I didn’t have much space left, that’s more of less what it became. Now for the 6th and last image, Pixiv page here, the author’s name is YiLee, Pixiv page for the author here (same name on Danbooru). This last one was quite big (2000 x 2000 pixels) so using it as a texture, without people noticing it was hair and not texture, was quite simple. Here’s how I did it.

[I will use the word "file" to name the image I work on.] I started out by making a simple rectangle with the Shape tool. I flattened it by merging it with a new empty layer, then I entered “Transformation mode” (Ctrl+T) and turned it ~ -10°. I hit Enter to exit  “Transformation mode” (I don’t know how to say this any other way… I work with Photoshop in French since I got it in 2010 :/) and duplicated the layer multiple times (Alt, and then drag the duplicated layer where you want) to fill half of the file. Then I took my 5 images and put them on the file. In the Layers window, I put one image “over”/”on top of” each rectangle I previously made and created a clipping mask (Alt+Ctrl+G) for each of them, and then I resized them to only see the part I needed to see. Next, for the “frames” (or borders, as you want it), I simply clicked twice on a rectangle layer which opened a new window with a handful of options, checked/ticked & clicked on “Border” in the menu on the left. I put a thickness of 2 pixels, then selected Gradient in the “Fill type:” menu. I selected a green to white gradient with the little arrow pointing downwards next to a black to white gradient and in the “Style:” menu, I selected an option with would translate to “exploded form” in English. Simply put, just select the last one in the list, after the “Diamond” style. I realize this can be difficult to understand, since I translate both my thoughts and software at the same time and the way I explain is already confused in French but… This is the way to have images with a double-colored border. Using the same method, with a 3 pixel thickness and a gradient made of 3 colors, you could do the same thing.

After doing all that (^), I simply put everything thing I just made into a group, duplicated it (because I am a true paranoiac) and flattened the images together (not with the layer titled “Background” or the rest, though; only the group with itself). Then I took the 6th image, put it “above” the new layer (something like “New layer 17″), created a clipping mask, ajusted/rezised the thing and Voilà ! No obscure and complicated color adjustment needed. I do love the “Fusion mode” (Google TRanslate says it’s Blending mode but I don’t trust him… I still do not know if that’s really its English version but… meh).

Obvious C4D is obvious. That is partly what I used for the background of the whole thing; I used a texture (link to it here – made by a Make-Your-Horse forum member that kind of disappeared/took a new name, Cartatoto) and, indeed, a C4D, “t317051_C4D33“, that I already mentioned/used in my 6th article. I tend to use the same C4Ds since I only have 9 of them and am lazy to go searching for more/others.

For the text, I (only) used a font called “Matrix Code NF1” that should come from Dafont. The stuff I wrote was quite improvised on the moment (as you can see if you read what’s written right under Link)… I don’t really like this signature, to be completely honest, but I tried out a lot of stuff and it’s more or less O.K.

We may now go on to the second signature.

Did I hear a Hallelujah over there… ? Must’ve been my imagination…

A greenish-blue-yellow signature that you're obviously not seeing.

The signature I mentioned when talking about the one right above. I really like this one.

For those who got a glimpse of my AMV, you know about the whole “Analog Marmelade” thing; how it’s an improvised title inspired by one of Vibrasphere’s songs, “Analog Marinade”, and that it doesn’t mean anything – well, that’s still true.

This was made out of image  #3 and image #6 from the first signature in this post. I also used a C4D for the background, that you can find over here. I used a free pattern I found a few days before, that you can find here (to install stuff in .PAT into Photoshop, you need to do the exact same thing as when you “load” brushes, only in the pattern “menu” – 1: click on bucket tool 2: when you click, a bucket pic should appear in the top left corner; to the right of it, there will be a drop-down menu where “foreground color” is selected; select “Pattern” 3:to the right of this, there is a little preview of what the selected pattern looks like; click on the arrow pointing downwards right next to the preview thingy; another drop-down menu appears, and there’s an arrow pointing to the right that appears in this menu; click on that second arrow 4:click on “Load patterns” [or something similar] and select your .PAT file 5:you’re done!).

In this one, I used a load clipping masks. There’s a clipping mask for the guy’s skin color; there’s another one for his hair. The clipped thing was always “image #6″. Then I made a ANALOG MARMELADE text layer, duplicated it with Alt, made a separate one for ANALOG and then MARMELADE, put an “exterior glow” on it, and Voilà ! I used another clipping mask when I used the Hexagon pattern. I first made a black to white gradient on a layer, applied the pattern on a separate layer, clipped the pattern on the gradient layer, and then played with the “Blending options”. “Image #6″ appears in the background too, as does the texture I mentioned. The font I used is hooge 05_53, which came in a superb package, along with a Visual Style Nostromo made last February, “Sulaco Visual Style“.

Long detailed articles for the win !

007 Little Android.

29 Oct
The Android illustration I made that you obviously aren't seeing.

Little Android mascot, with Halloween-esque background.

I was waiting for my MMORPG to update itself, so I started drawing the Android mascot that’s been on my desktop wallpaper for a few weeks now. I have an Acer Aspire 5532 computer (the one with 1,6 Ghz processor and 250 Gb hard disk) with a Windows Se7en OS -it’s rather lame for MMO’s, who usually require at least 1,6 Ghz and recommend 2,0, but meh, it’s just okay for the use I have for it- and I have installed and Android visual theme to get everything more customized. This is the one I have, though I downloaded mine from deviantART. The picture shows how it looked before I modified the wallpaper to make it look more Halloween-esque and how RocketDock (that’s what the dock at the top is called – very useful little fella, you won’t even want the W7 taskbar anymore once you know how to customise your Dock and the icons that are on it) looked before the beast within me was unleashed upon hundreds, thousands of icons and skins and docklets and dkgfkjdfh. Over here you can get to know more about RocketDock – it’s basically a Windows version of the Macintosh OS’s taskbar.

What was the initial topic again ? Oh, right, the drawing. All there is to know is that it was done using MS Paint and it took 15 minutes. The Android mascot is so cuute. <3

That’ll be all for now. Not much to saw about a doodle anyway.

Ps: I may be creating another blog for some ‘technological’ news. I have tons of RSS that flood me every day with megatons of interesting stuff, and since I keep spamming my Facebook page/wall like mad because of them, I’ll probably switch to a blog instead. This new blog won’t change anything about this one, I simply wanted to keep, um, well you! who is reading, informed.

006 Yet another signature.

23 Oct
A signature you're obviously not seeing.

A signature for a chat mmorpg game's forum. Though I don't go on their forum. Meh.

To know that posting cyberart (I learned this term today *_* //so proud//)  wasn’t even in my plans when I started this art blog… Oh well, nothing ever goes according to plan (hm, where did I hear this again ?).

First, before getting to the credits, let’s say a few lines about where I use this thing and what in hell is an “MMORPG chat game”. I know only two (one’s name I forgot, but everyone looks like an *okay, prepare yourself, people* EGG and the other one is the one I’m on when I have nothing else to do, BlablaLand) but I don’t think there’s much more since it’s kind of childish. So, you know, it’s for chatting. Except that you have your little character that you can customize with the “skins” (the *EHEM*goddamn*HEM* site is French yet the names given to those are still ‘skins’…) that you either already have when you sign up (more or less 20 skins) or that you buy after you earned some BBL, blablions.”BBL” is actually also the site’s “initials” (or is it called “initials”?) but no one seems to mind this non-sense…

By the way, it’s a rather childish game, there are people from mostly 10 to 17/18 years old… But at 10PM, you have some guys there asking everyone they see moving “Do you have cam ?” so… let’s say that the night unleashes, um, stuff.

So let’s get started with the credits.  I actually only had to take 4 screen shots of my character, cut (some of) them out, paste them on a new 170×600 file, get three C4D in the background, play like a child with the layer’s fusion mode, add some text and… voilà. It took me a little less than an hour. The C4D I used : “Disaster by dogparry“, “0806220513213773079” and “t317051_C4D33“. I took them all from Make Your Horse’s resources section two or three years ago, hence the last C4D that disappeared and I had to upload again. The last link  (“Make Your Horses’s [...]“) leads to the post from which I took the third, in case someone wants to get back to the source of this, it could help. This person has used it in a deviation, on DeviantART. And for those wondering, here’s how to use a C4D; with layer’s fusion mode.

Moving on… I tried to make the illusion that the four characters were actually ‘standing’ or ‘flying’ on parts of the C4Ds. With all the effects I added afterwards, it didn’t really work out for the middle-right one, but the others seem o.k. On the other hand, I’m really proud how the ‘flying’ letters turned out. They’re almost bad-ass. 8]

We’ll note the mini reference guiding people here… Obvious ref is obvious. e_e It was really helpful for filling out the space at the bottom, too.

005 Halloween signature

21 Oct

A forum signature for Halloween that you're obviously not seeing (maybe because it's 3 MB big).

A (zombie) forum signature, for Halloween.

So this is… a signature. I actually don’t know how to say this in English, but let’s say you know what I’m talking about, okay ? You know, when you’re on a forum (Big parenthesis: if I keep saying ‘forum’ instead of ‘forums’, well… it’s because the French words for ‘forums’ is ‘forum‘ and… uh… yeah.) and you post a message on a thread ? On some forums, there’s this option that authorizes users to have a ‘forum signature’, in which you can put text, a video, images, or whatever you want. Well, there’s this French forum on which I am ALSO an administrator (I luv forums <3) and for which I make myself a signature every month on so, usually when inspiration (or “artist’s UNblock”) hits me.

It’s actually a forum for Hordes.fr, which is the (original) French version of the zombie survival game Die2Nite. Usually the updates are tested on us, the French server, and then they put some parts of it on the two other servers (the third one is a German one, DieVerdammten). That makes the French server react like (watch out, big words coming up!) bitches about every update they get and the English server’s Hordes.fr’s players as a soothsayer (for now, thank you, Google Translate) of updates to come. If you see me on either of these as Phera or Shem, I probably won’t eat you (Hordes/D2N/DV fans, you can see what I did there 8]) so please declare that you know me from elsewhere… e_e

Getting back to the topic ! Here are the credits: first illustration by Agasang (ガガミング) (OH MY GOSH AN UMINKO NO NAKU KORO NI FAN! O_O), Pixiv Page here and WebSite here(from the news on the Main page, it looks like it hasn’t been updated since 2010, but there are still great pieces there – it even looks like he’s drawing some manga). Danbooru page (watch out for NSFW adds!) for the drawing here, since it comes from a game I don’t know of, Fatal Frame, and have the laziness to explore and explain. Oh and by the way, since I found his/her blog too (thanks to Danbooru)… It’s in Korean, but it looks like it’s updated quite frequently. GORGEOUS ARTWORK ONCE A WEEK, OHMYGOSH YESYESYES.

As for the second image, I simply can’t seem to find the artist’s page (I think it’s labeled as missing on Yahoo!) so I’m just going to put the pic’ Danbooru page (the NSFW adds are still there!) again.

Moving on ! This animation took me a liiittle less than two hours (which is kind of unusual). I thought that it would be over in more or less thirty minutes, but it was a little more complicated that I initially estimated it. The main problem came of the transparency that had to change gradually from frame to frame, though when you add layers in Photoshop CS4, you tend to get the problem of the layer appearing on every frame… So yeah, when I added the last few layers for the “second part” of the animation (with the second image), it almost became… chaos-suh(say it with The Joker’s style). First I wanted the red/normal color switch to last more, but I noticed it simply became annoying and a bit cliché after a while. I didn’t want the whole animation to end to abruptly, that’s mostly the reason for the second part’s existence.

…I think that’ll be all for this one.

004 HJMK’s summer designs (2)

16 Oct
The screen of the first summer HJMK design you're obsviously not seeing.

The first summer "design"/skin I made for the Harajuku Mangaka forum. Click to enlarge !

Since I’ve already posted the actual HJMK Halloween design,

I thought it would be cool to post the one & ½ that came before. I made this one at the very end of May, and other than playing with the layer fusion options, I didn’t do much on this piece. The “Who Is Online / Qui Est En Ligne” pic comes from the same illustration as the banner. The drawing was done by くろぶた月刊, Kurobuta Gekkan, and can be found here (Pixiv link to the original pic).

I wanted it to be something… a little bit strange compared to usual forum styles. I also wanted it to be “refreshing” (as in a toothpaste commercial). I made the table’s borders round, but for some reason, it won’t show up on the screen shot.

I don’t remember how much time it took, but I would say about a little more than an hour, maybe two, for everything (images and colors).

The second summer design I made for HJMK, screen shot that you obviously aren't seeing.

Screen shot of the second summer design I made for HJMK. Obviously, nothing changed except the banner. Click to enlarge !

Now for the second design,

which is more a 1 & ½ design, since only the banner and the background were changed. I wanted to keep the “bubbly” and “fresh” feel to everything (hence the OVER bubbly bg). First I wanted to change the borders for a light pink (like the banner’s text) to play with contrasts, but I just abandoned the thing after trying out a few adjustments.

As for the original picture, it was drawn by 芹菜, Selina, and can be found on his/her pixiv page. For those who are not familiar with Pixiv (like me; I am almost in love with this pink-haired character and I can’t even see more pic’s of her ;_;), you can browse some of his/her work on Danbooru. Careful, there’s a lot of NSFW (Not Safe For Work)  adds.

And since we’re (wait, who?) are talking about Pixiv…

I just found Miwa Shirow’s TIGER&BUNNY fanart ! O ¬ O //OHMAYGOSHDEAD//

“]Some gorgeous fan art that you're obviously not seeing ! ;__;

OHMYGAWD MIWA SHIROW <3<3 [Click to get on the Pixiv page of the illustration. ♥

So, um, yeah.

What were we talking about before… ? Right, the banner. I like the big bold HJMK letters in the back of the text, looks cool and slightly bad-ass.

So, um yeah, I think that’ll be all for today. c:

003 HJMK’s 7th design

16 Oct
The screen of the Halloween HJMK design you're obsviously not seeing.

The Halloween "design"/skin I made for the Harajuku Mangaka forum. Click to enlarge !

It was inevitable: a Halloween-themed skin is a MUST for a mangakas’ forum !

Yes, this is indeed a new “category”., for “web designing”. (:

Actually, in the screen shot, the credits were cut off but here they are: the original image can be found here, on Itto Maru’s blog. It’s actually an album cover, but I cut the title part off -didn’t want to go through all the trouble of removing it. I actually didn’t even modify the original pic. You know, the “lines” you’re seing on the image ? Well, they too were already there (I took a scanned “version” because it was bigger – HIGH QUALITY FTW). The album is by Nayuta, which, if I’m correct, is a Nico Nico Douga singer (Nico Nico Douga is the equivalent of YouTube but in Japan. It is more Anime and Vocaloid orientated, though). The name of the album is Gothika. You can find a small amount of info’ on the album here (click on The Story). This looks like a RolePlay forum but… honestly, I don’t even know what the hell it’s supposed to be ! Here‘s the official webpage (in Japanese) and there’s also a Facebook page. From what I’ve understood, the video that came with all this (illustrating the Child’s Play song) is only a promotional one.

That’s it for the big story. Let’s get back to talking about the making of this design (actually, I would REALLY appreciate if someone found the exact word to name this thing, because I’m obviously having some trouble here). For the banner, I only had to make a layer (I used Photoshop CS5), cut the borders of it to create the illusion that there wasn’t any “linear”, rectangular, border and  create a clipping mask. And add the text with some other clipping masks. God I love clipping masks, they save me some much time. I can’t even imagine how hard it would be not having them. Just a last note about the banner: the “Happy Halloween” text was supposed to have a candy-like coloring, but maybe I reduced the opacity of it too much… We couldn’t read the text otherwise.

The menu icons (the little pink heart just below the banner, that are actually bouncing) were found on another forum. I’m not really a pixel art fan, but I know how to appreciate -some parts- of it.

For the “Who Is Online ?” (Qui Est en Ligne, at the bottom), I simply took another drawing from Itto Maru’s blog, added the ♦ texture, changed the colors a little bit for the two characters (the Red Cape and the Wolf) and threw a border around the thing. Simple and rather fitting with the rest.

I entirely made the overall background, only with the ♦, first in text format and then converted to a layer for less RAM problems. Then I threw a load of gradients and clipping masks together to produce… THIS. I think that the colors for this design are a little strange and some don’t fit very well together but… at least it’s not a bloody as the forum skin for last year’s Halloween.

As a little ‘plus’, I simply wanted to add that the “Productions” box contains the actual projects that are done on HJMK (which, if you haven’t figured it out already, is the ‘acronym’ for Harajuku Mangaka)… though a rather big part of them are being made in, let’s say, slow motion (if not completely abandoned). Then you have the recently active threads, a jump to our “partners” (basically, we just put a link to their forum and they do the same) and the Top-Sites box. Top-Sites are a cool way to draw attention to your forum because if people are on other forums, they may be voting for them and the will see our forum pop up in the list (I’m a terrible explainer, I know – better to go see for yourself). The more you vote for your forum, the higher it will be in the list and the more (well that’s theory but whatever) views you’ll get. The strange thing about HJMK, is that usually you’ll see 3 to 5 “invités” (people who’re not registered on the forum and that are simply visiting the thing) but only one or two people that are logged in… It may be that because our forum isn’t very active (and that in the “visiting people’s” view of the forum, you only see the latest active threads in the public forums), people are simply staying around, looking at stuff like the tutorials (actually, I’m not sure if unregistered people can access that part…) or else… To be honest, I think that if we had an english counterpart to our forum (or if we became a bilingual forum), we would be a more active community, but I don’t think that the people of HJMK would really be OK with that. I mean, most people from Quebec (as in “québécois de pure souche”) are rather pro-French and pro-independent-Quebec-ists. But… Urrgh, I shouldn’t be talking about this on my artistic blog ! >_<

The full design was made in approximatively an hour and a half. The colors took approximatively fifteen minutes to adjust.

Some, um, yes, that will be all. ‘ v ‘

PS: Wow this post is so… d***… long.
